APNIC meeting Brisbane 2000

Local food and culture

Language

English is the official language of Australia. Spelling and vocabulary preferences are generally British rather than American. There are many uniquely Australian words (G'day is the normal greeting in Australia) and Australians also shorten many words and names and put an o or a y on the end. So afternoon becomes arvo and football becomes footy.

Food

Brisbane has many restaurants and cafes catering to all tastes. Visitors will find plenty of options in the city centre, although more adventurous diners may wish to try the surrounding areas of Fortitude Valley, Paddington, and West End. Fortitude Valley, in particular, is home to a variety of Asian restaurants.

For a taste of local delicacies, try Moreton Bay Bugs (not actually bugs - they are crustaceans, similar to a small lobster) or Mud Crabs.

Many restaurants in Brisbane are BYO only, meaning that you have to Bring Your Own alcoholic drinks. Although most of the central restaurants are licensed to sell alcohol, it is a good idea to check when you are making your reservations.

Your hotel will be able to recommend restaurants; however, you may also want to try the following online dining guides: Brisbane Tourism, Pulse, EatingOut, Brisbane247.

Drink

Australia used to be regarded mainly beer as a drinking nation; however, in recent years, the quality of Australian wine has become increasingly recognised both internationally and at home.

Australian beers are normally bitter lagers and the main local variety in Brisbane is XXXX (pronounced Four-X). If you are used to American-style beers, please remember that Australian beers tend to be much stronger (around 4.5 - 5%).

The best Australian wines generally come from the southern states and common varieties include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc (whites); and Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, (reds). For those who prefer lighter red wines, try Merlot or Pinot Noir.

What to wear

Being a subtropical city, Brisbane is a relatively casual place and most styles of clothing will be acceptable. However, the casino and many nightclubs do have dress restrictions and may require that people do not wear jeans, sports shoes, or T-shirts. If in doubt, check with your hotel before you go out.

Where to go out

The centre of Brisbane has an international casino (The Conrad Treasury Casino) and many bars and night clubs. Brisbane also has a strong live music scene. Your hotel will be able to guide you to something suitable. There are also free newspaper-style guides to nightlife (such as Time Off and Scene) which are normally available in cafes and bars.

Those interested in cultural pursuits should visit the Queensland Cultural Centre, which is a short walk across the bridge from the central shopping district. The centre includes the Queensland Art Gallery, Museum, State Library, and the Performing Arts Centre.

Tipping

Tipping is not widely practiced in Australia except to reward very good service. It is usual, though, to round-up bills in restaurants and cafes.

Weights, Measures, Temperatures, Dates

Australia uses metric measurements (road signs show distances and speeds as kilometres and kilometres per hour respectively).

Dates are formatted as dd/mm/yyyy.
