APNIC reverse DNS - Bruce Campbell, APNIC

This presentation outlined APNIC's policies and procedures relating to reverse DNS handling.

In response to a question about the automated reloading of zone files, it was explained that having technical staff present when the reload takes place enables a quick response to any problems. However, it was noted that the code in use appears to now be stable and that this procedure may be changed in the future.

The procedure for ISPs making delegations to subnetted customers was clarified. It was noted that contrary to RFC2370, the delegation should not be made using slash notation as this is not compatible with all versions of BIND.

Legacy transfers - Bruce Campbell, APNIC

This presentation outlined a possible RIR approach to dealing with legacy "swamp" address space by transferring registration data to the regional databases from the ARIN whois. The presentation also outlined the problem of reverse delegations for swamp space.

Questions and discussion

An ARIN representative noted that there are approximately 49 /8s affected. He also noted that that the IETF still needs to resolve key handling issues. He also noted that there needs to be a differentiation of the types of records in the database that need to be displayed. There is to be an ARIN presentation on this issue later in this program.

There was a general discussion about the method to be used for updating records across RIR databases.

It was suggested that the process of delegating the /8s could be separated from the management of the swamp space. It was confirmed that ARIN has been negotiating with vendors for an appropriate server platform to carry the re-delegation work, although there is currently no definite timeline.
