Report from JANOG

Masaru Mukai, JANOG

This presentation provided an update on the status and activities of JANOG, including the formation of the JANOG IPv6 BOF, which deals with Address policy and routing issues.

Questions and discussion

There was a question about whether the JANOG BOF faces the problem of information sharing between business competitors. It was noted that communication is good but that sensitive information such as costs and network topology are not discussed.

Update on peering in Australia

The presenter gave a general update on the number, relative size, and operations of Exchange Points in Australia.

Formation of the Public Neutral Internet Exchange Point

Tan Tin Wee, National University of Singapore

This presentation outlined the current formation of the first public neutral IXP for Singapore, the Singapore Open IXP Project (SOX). This is a joint project of the National University Singapore and Cisco.

Questions and discussion

It was noted that final approval for this project to proceed has been granted in principle and that the project is expected to commence very soon. It was also noted that a business model based on a non-profit basis is now being prepared.

It was noted that the final engineering details have not yet been finalised.

It was noted that this project will support both multilateral peering and bilateral peering. It was stressed that this will be a community project and that participants will be involved in determining policy. It was noted that there must be caution shown in terms of how to determine who can join. It was suggested that this should be determined by a neutral body, to avoid the appearance of having formed a cartel.

It was noted that currently all capacity into the building is provided by a single provider (OneNet) but that others may be brought on board.

It was noted that there is currently no policy relating to filtering.

Report from JPNAP

Katsuyasu Toyama, Internet Multifeed

This presentation provided an update on the status and activities of JPNAP, which is a joint project of IIJ and NTT to provide another IXP for Japan. The presentation also outlined the experimental Photonic IX project.

Questions and discussion

It was noted that there is currently no plan to interconnect the JPNAP IXes in Tokyo and Osaka (due to commence later in 2001).

There was general discussion about physical connectivity issues relating to the building used for JPNAP Tokyo.

Proposal for the formation of a regional IXP for Asia

Pindar Wong, APIA

The presenter gave a brief explanation of e-ASEAN and ARIX, regarding the concepts of interconnecting IXPs in the Asian region (see www.e-aseantf.org).

Questions and discussion

There was a brief discussion of tariffing issues.

It was noted that the e-ASEAN Task Force needs constructive community input.

Bill Manning, IETF

A resource kit has been developed for the e-ASEAN task force, which is also available to the public, for the establishment and operation of IXPs.
