NOPEER route attribute

Geoff Huston, Telstra

This presentation outlined a proposal to define an additional BGP attribute to address traffic engineering issues in BGP.

Questions and discussion

It was explained that this proposal would have no implications for the existing implementation of the protocol.

It was noted that the �time to live?attribute would not work to achieve this goal as the relative number of AS hops around the world is actually quite low.

Routing table analysis

Philip Smith, Cisco Systems

This presentation was an update of the regular routing table report maintained by this presenter. It was noted that there have been several enhancements and optimisations to the CIDR report.

Questions and discussion

It was noted that it would be interesting to perform an analysis which may indicate to what extent genuine attempts at traffic engineering show up in these results, specifically looking at 1 or 2 bits away from the current registry allocation boundary.

Additional graphs were displayed by Randy Bush to illustrate the potential effects of filtering to restrain growth in routing.

It was noted that there are plans to perform a similar analysis on IPv6.
