The chair introduced the SIG and explained the agenda.

  1. IPv6 status update

    This presentation provided an overview of the latest IPv6 statistics. The presentation included data on RIR allocation statistics, APNIC allocation and assignment statistics, and an update of assignment registration and global IPv6 routing table data.

    Questions and discussion

    • The presenter was asked for the percentage of announcements versus the number that announced their routes. The presenter responded that this data was not currently available.
    • It was asked if the number of registrations was increasing. The presenter responded that it was important to note that this data included figures from NIRs, which affected the results.
    • The Chair asked that the presenter at the next meeting include data on the actual number of announcements in the routing table which were responding.

  2. Evaluations of Growth-based Address Partitioning (GAP) algorithm with real data

    Mei Wang, Cisco and Tao Chen, CNNIC

    This presentation discussed alternative methods to allocate IPv6, focussing on GAP algorithms. The presenters also briefly outlined the sequential and bisection methods. The presenters covered the main problems dealt with in the project, such as the need to reduce fragmentation. The presenters also detailed performance results using real APNIC data and software developed to simulate allocation using GAP algorithms. The presenter concluded by outlining plans for future work on the project.

    Questions and discussion

    • It was asked if the presenter (Mei Wang) had read RFC 3531. The presenter said she had not seen it and should probably read it. The Chair asked if this RFC conflicted with the proposal presented. The speaker said it appeared to be very similar in terms of the algorithm and goals.
    • It was suggested that it would be appropriate to incorporate this information into proposals at the Policy SIG. The Chair agreed, advising that the IPv6 technical SIG can only present information, and that any proposals should be referred to the Policy SIG.

  3. ENABLE: Enabling efficient and operational mobility in large networks

    This presentation discussed a project that aimed to enhance IPv6 mobility in large and heterogeneous access networks, and address basic mobility issues in mobile IPv6 networks. The presenter outlined goals and design principles for long-term evolution beyond IPv6.

    Questions and discussion

    • The Chair asked if he could join the ENABLE project in Japan. The presenter responded that as the project was funded by the European Commission, funding was open only to European partners. However, it was noted that they welcomed participants from other regions. It was noted that ENABLE was already working with Juo Wei in China.
    • The Chair suggested that ENABLE could work with the WIDE project in Japan. The presenter agreed that this was a possibility.

  4. IPv6 status in Indonesia

    John Sihar, IDNIC

    This presentation outlined the status of IPv6 in Indonesia, and current activities. It was noted that IPv6 deployment in Indonesia was in its very early stages. Deployment of Indonesia's first IPv6 native network was also at a very early stage. The IPv6 taskforce in Indonesia was formed in 2006. It was explained that the taskforce was working in cooperation with APJII and government agencies. Major activities included encouraging telcos, operators and manufacturers to implement and benefit from IPv6 technologies.

  5. IPv6 deployment status in Japan

    Takashi L. Nakamura, IPv6 Promotion Council of Japan / Mitsubishi Research Institute

    This presentation provided an update on IPv6 deployment status in Japan. The presenter covered current government activities and IPv6 application services in Japan. It was noted that IPv6 had been promoted and developed within the Japanese government since 2000. This project had moved onto the next stage with the 2006 IP reform strategy implementation. It was noted this project aimed to make Japan's government IPv6 compatible by 2008.

    Questions and discussion

    • It was suggested that a correction to figures quoted was required, as 5 million IPv6-ready sites was an over-count. The correct figure was 2 million IPv6-ready sites.
    • It was noted that the transition strategy outlined in the presentation was a good model. It was asked where documentation could be accessed. The presenter responded that the documentation was currently under construction, and might be available in Summer.
    • It was asked if there were plans to translate the Japanese documents into English. The presenter was unsure if this would happen, but noted that some documents produced for the Japanese cabinet have been translated into English.

    Due to time constraints the Chair had to cut question time short, and asked other questioners to go direct to the presenter after the session.

  6. Draft SIG guidelines

    Kazu Yamamoto, SIG Chair

    The Chair discussed the new draft for SIG Chair and Co-chair guidelines, and asked all attendees to read it. The Chair emphasised that this was not a policy proposal. The Chair also provided the details for the APNIC opening reception, and various meeting promotions.
