A reminder on the proper use of APNIC data

It has come to the APNIC Secretariat's attention that a nominee for the upcoming Executive Council (EC) election has sent emails to a number of people associated with APNIC. Concerns have been expressed by some of the email recipients that their email addresses should only be used in the APNIC Whois Database and not anywhere else.

Please be aware that the APNIC Secretariat plays a neutral role in EC elections and does not provide any contact information about APNIC members to any EC nominee.

The APNIC Secretariat has contacted the nominee involved to advise the nominee of the following terms of use of contact data available publically through the APNIC website, mailing lists, and whois services:

1. Use of whois data

It is against the APNIC Whois Database terms of use to extract email addresses from the database for any purpose except agreed Internet operational purposes. A link to this policy is displayed at the top of each whois search result:

Any use of this material to target advertising or similar activities is explicitly forbidden and will be prosecuted. APNIC requests to be notified of any such activities or suspicions thereof.

2. Use of mailing list subscription lists


It is against APNIC's privacy policy for emails subscribed to APNIC mailing lists to be used for any purpose except for receiving the contents of the mailing list the email is subscribed to. Below is the relevant part of APNIC's privacy policy:

The information gathered by subscription procedures is used only in the mailing lists you specify.

The APNIC privacy statement is linked from every page of the APNIC website.

In addition, it is against the laws of privacy in some countries to use email addresses for purposes other than what the subscribers originally intended.

All EC nominees are free to campaign for a seat on the Executive Council but must be mindful of the terms of use described above.
