Change to minimum portable prefix size on APNIC IPv4 address blocks

As a follow up to an informational presentation by the APNIC Secretariat at the APNIC 30 plenary, IPv4 Tomorrow?, APNIC is making an operational change to the minimum portable prefix size for all APNIC IPv4 ranges.

As a follow up to an informational presentation by the APNIC Secretariat at the APNIC 30 plenary, IPv4 Tomorrow?, APNIC is making an operational change to the minimum portable prefix size for all APNIC IPv4 ranges.

As APNIC's IPv4 transfer policy, implemented in February 2010, permits transfers of /24 blocks and larger, it is now possible that portable prefixes within a /8 are now smaller than the minimum allocation size of a /22. As many network operators use an RIR's minimum allocation size to configure router filters, this could mean legitimately transferred /24 or /23 IPv4 prefixes are filtered out of routing tables. Therefore, to prevent this, the minimum portable prefix size for all APNIC IPv4 /8 address blocks has been changed to a /24.

Please update your network configurations, such as router filter sizes based on the IPv4 minimum prefix size, where required.

Please note, there has been no change to the minimum IPv4 allocation size, which remains a /22.
