In its capacity as an official APEC Guest, APNIC will attend the APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (TEL) 42 conference in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam from 2-7 August 2010.

Building on the successful "Workshop for IPv6: Transforming the Internet", held at APEC TEL 41 in May 2010, APNIC is once again a sponsoring organization for a third IPv6 workshop. "Workshop on IPv6: Securing sustainable growth of the Internet" will be held on 2 August 2010 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.

This workshop was proposed by the US and Japanese governments, and it is supported by a number of APEC economies such as Canada, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, and APEC Guests ISOC and APNIC. Miwa Fujii, APNIC Senior IPv6 Program Specialist, will continue to provide support to the Working Group organizers.

The objectives of the workshop include:

These workshops illustrate not only the close working relationship APNIC has with the TEL community, but also the significant contribution APNIC has made to the preparation of the conference. APNIC emphasizes that IPv6 is the key to "sustainable, long-term development of a ubiquitous and open Internet".

The major outcome of the APEC TEL 41 IPv6 workshop in May 2010 was an agreement among participants that the APEC TELMIN8 Declaration should include a call to action and the recognition of the need for IPv6 adoption. This declaration will be announced in October 2010.

Participants also agreed that the TELMIN8 statement should consider tying the 2015 broadband penetration goal to IPv6 uptake. For more information, please refer to the Report on the APEC TEL 41 IPv6 Workshop - IPv6: Transforming the Internet. The TEL 42 IPv6 workshop will build upon these positive outcomes by focusing on more detailed actions to be taken by the APEC TEL member economies.

APEC TEL aims to improve telecommunications and information structure in the Asia Pacific region by developing and implementing appropriate telecommunications and information policies, including relevant human resource and development cooperation strategies.
