2014 ISIF Asia grants recipients announced today

Eleven projects selected to be implemented in 2014.

ISIF Asia, the Information Society Innovation Fund, is pleased to announce the selection of 11 projects, including 3 from the Pacific Islands, to be implemented in 2014.

"We are excited about this pool of selected recipients," says Sylvia Cadena, Community Awards and Grants Specialist, "in particular, the quality of the applications, the relevant development issues they address, and the collaboration among different organizations on a specific project. We also noted some projects attempted to replicate successful initiatives to further build capacity, knowledge and experience across the region, which is very promising for the future."

During the call for applications, ISIF Asia received a total of 139 applications from across the Asia Pacific region. The submissions were received from Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Kiribati, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Niue, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Viet Nam.

2014 grant recipients

  1. Improving Internet Connectivity in Pacific Island countries with network coded TCP. Pacific Islands Chapter of the Internet Society (PICISOC), Cook Islands, Kiribati, New Zealand, and Tuvalu.
  2. Enhancing Communication and Co-operation across South Asia: An ICT Solution to Script Barriers. Punjabi University, Patiala, India.
  3. Cook Islands Maori Database. Cook Islands Internet Action Group, Cook Islands.
  4. Using technology to improve citizen science monitoring of coral reefs in Indonesia. CoralWatch, The University of Queensland, Australia/Indonesia.
  5. "Chiang-Rai MestTV": An Educational Video-on-Demand (E-VoD) System for a Rural Hill-Tribe Village via a Community Wireless Mesh Network (CWMN). Internet Education and Research Laboratory, Asian Institute of Technology, in collaboration with the Mirror Foundation and the THNIC Foundation, Thailand.
  6. Digitalising and preserving Oro, a secret signage language of the nomad Penans in the rainforest. Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI-CoERI), Malaysia.
  7. Chuuk State Solar Server Education Hub, Federated States of Micronesia. i-Solutions, Micronesia.
  8. Using Mobile Application and Mapping Platform to Increase Accountability in Delivery of Maternal Health Services for Tea Garden Workers in Assam. Nazdeek, India.
  9. Extending ECHO to Homenet Indonesia. eHomemakers, Malaysia/Indonesia.
  10. Monitoring and early warning of landslides in Viet Nam. University of Engineering and Technology and Viet Nam National University - Hanoi, Viet Nam.
  11. Link TB with Technology (LTT). Operation ASHA, Cambodia.

ISIF Asia is a joint initiative between the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Swedish government through the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and APNIC that is aimed at stimulating creative solutions to ICT development needs in the Asia Pacific region. The grants for 2014 have also been sponsored by the DotAsia Organization.
