APNIC is a regular active participant and invited guest at the APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (TEL). APEC TEL 47 will be held in Bali, Indonesia.

APNIC will be participating as a guest of the APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (APEC TEL 47), which will have one of its regular meetings this week in Bali, Indonesia.

As a regular guest at APEC TEL meetings since 2008, APNIC's participation is focused on spreading information and knowledge to government representatives in the Asia Pacific region on the importance of transitioning to IPv6 for the continued growth and stability of the Internet. APNIC has contributed to the IPv6 Guidelines produced by APEC TEL and endorsed by regional ICT ministers in declarations made in previous TELMIN meetings:

From TELMIN 8, 2010 in Okinawa, Japan:

"We recognize that the free pool of IPv4 addresses is expected to be exhausted around 2012, and the transitions to IPv6 will facilitate the achievement of universal broadband access in the APEC region. We support the IPv6 Guideline developed by TEL."

From TELMIN 9, 2012 in Saint Petersburg, Russia:

"Given the rapid growth of fixed and mobile communication devices requiring unique Internet addresses in all member economies, we welcome TEL's continuous efforts to progress transition to IPv6, as expressed in the TEL IPv6 Guidelines. We encourage TEL to cooperate with all stakeholders to achieve this goal."

At this meeting, APNIC will continue to engage with regional government stakeholders to support any national initiatives to deploy IPv6. APNIC's Senior IPv6 Program Specialist, Miwa Fujii, notes that, "We have seen much positive support from various governments in this region to increase IPv6 adoption. It comes in the form of effective partnerships between the public and private sectors, supporting capacity building on IPv6 skills in the industry and enabling governments' networks with IPv6 and so on."

APNIC recommends to APEC TEL members that their initiatives for universal broadband deployment should also include a plan for IPv6 transition. Furthermore, as part of an ongoing commitment to the security and stability of the Internet, APNIC also offers to collaborate on capacity building initiatives with Law Enforcement Agencies in the region.
