APNIC participates at 3rd APT Preparatory Group Meeting

APNIC recently participated at the third Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Preparatory Group meeting for the International Telecommunications Union(ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference 2014, to be staged in Busan, Republic of Korea during October/November this year.

The APT is the regional intergovernmental organization focusing on telecommunications and assists the regional membership to prepare for ITU world conferences such as the ITU Plenipotentiary. APNIC has a long association with APT and became an Affiliate Member in September 2013.

APNIC Internet Policy Development Consultant, Adam Gosling, has been following the APT preparatory process since the first meeting and attended the PP14-3 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Adam was able to consult and contribute to the development of Preliminary APT Common Proposals (PACPs) related to IP addressing and Internet governance.

This meeting finalized a total of 18 PACPs covering a wide range of issues including a provision in one proposal about the Internet of Things recognizing the importance of IPv6 and calling on “relevant organizations and communities to raise greater awareness and to promote the adoption of IPv6 within Member States and through capacity building within the mandate of the Union”.

APNIC has been a Member of the Development Sector of the ITU since 2003. This meeting was an opportunity to gain a detailed understanding of the key issues to be discussed and decided at the Plenipotentiary Conference later this year, which will determine the priorities that the ITU will follow in the next four years, including collaboration with partners such as APNIC.

Participation in the meeting process also provided an opportunity to meet several candidates for the upcoming election of ITU executive positions and to meet delegations from regional governments.

The fourth and final APT preparatory meeting will be held from 18 to 22 August in Bangkok, Thailand.
