Last week APNIC held its third APNIC Regional Meeting (ARM3), in conjunction with the first Bangladesh Network Operators Group Conference (bdNOG1).
bdNOG was established in late 2013 to bring together network engineers and Internet professionals in Bangladesh. APNIC is proud to have helped to establish bdNOG and to have supported bdNOG1 as a founding partner. APNIC's Nurul Islam has been elected as bdNOG's first president.
As part of bdNOG1, APNIC trainers assisted with the following workshop and tutorial sessions from 19 to 22 May:
- BGP Routing (IPv4/IPv6)
- Network Security
- Understanding RPKI
- BGP Advanced Multihoming Techniques
- APNIC Executive Council member, Gaurab Raj Upadhaya spoke at the Opening Plenary as a Guest of Honour, about the importance of NOGs to the technical community.
- Paul Wilson delivered a keynote presentation about Internet growth in Bangladesh and the role of the technical community in Internet governance in Bangladesh.
- Paul and other staff met with Bangladesh's Minister for Information, Hasanul Haq Inu (who has attended APNIC Conferences in the past), and recently appointed Minister for Post and Telecommunication & ICT, Zunaid Ahmed Palak.
- Vivek Nigam presented the APNIC Policy and Services Update, and Sunny Chendi spoke about the Internet Measurement Network, which uses RIPE Atlas probes to measure Internet connectivity and reachability in real time. Sunny distributed five probes to interested community members.
- Sunny hosted an Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF) session, inviting two ISIF recipients from Bangladesh to present their projects: Dr Abdur Razzaque discussed the Driver Distraction Management Using Sensor Data Cloud project; and Dr Ragib Hasan discussed Shikkok.com, an open content education website project delivering learning to rural South Asian students.
- Paul participated in a panel discussion on Internet governance issues alongside Ms Luna Shamsuddoha from Dohatec New Media, GPIT's Syeda Yasmin Rahman, and ICANN's Yu-Chuang Kuek. The panel was moderated by Bangladesh Internet personality, Mustafa Jabbar.
- APNIC staff met with members of the ISP Association of Bangladesh Board, to discuss training collaboration and technical issues.
- APNIC staff met with Nazrul Islam Khan, Secretary of the Information and Communication Technology Division of the Bangladesh Government, to discuss IPv6, cyber security, and technical skills development
- APNIC staff met with representatives of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), to discuss IPv6 transition and training issues, and Internet governance topics.
- APNIC staff met with representatives from the Bangladesh CTO Forum to discuss security, IPv6, and training with APNIC agreeing to hold a training workshop for CTO Forum members (who are mostly drawn from the financial sector).
- Paul participated in a press conference alongside Minister Palak and representatives of bdNOG and ICANN, and was interviewed by several television and print journalists on topics such as Internet access, broadband penetration, and IPv6 deployment in Bangladesh.
- APNIC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with bdNOG to work more closely together to build capacity, share information, and facilitate the development of the Internet in Bangladesh.
- APNIC operated a Member Services lounge to assist Members and prospective Members with membership and Internet resource related enquiries.
